ESISA Embedded Bus Standard: It's All in the Stack!

The ESISA (Extended Stackable ISA) bus is the first cornerstone of our embedded solutions. We decided that our solutions should be preceded by the specification of a suitable embedded bus standard that carefully combines traditional and well known concepts with enhanced features, the ESISA bus. Besides memory devices implemented on standard SO-DIMMs, all our solutions base on the ESISA bus.

The ESISA embedded bus standard builds on the well known ISA bus (IEEE P996). Designed to be stackable, it eliminates the need of a backplane. It clarifies and enhances the ISA bus in several ways to meet specific requirements of embedded applications. Besides, it is completely and thoroughly documented and thus a real alternative to PC/104 (which relies on out-of-print publications).

ESISA is flexible enough to implement a variety of embedded solutions based on several types of stack modules. This allows a high level of modularity and reusability of well-tried modules. We focus on the development of important key functions, each implemented on separate modules, that can be used in many different module stack combinations. At the module's board level, high speed applications can be realized that interface to the ESISA bus through appropriate bridging. Whatever you need: It's all in the stack!

Smart I/O modules can be used as stand-alone components also that is, they do not require a full functional module stack. This extends the usability of ESISA modules and does not dictate using the bus where not appropriate or desired.

The ESISA bus is thoroughly documented. A hardware reference manual will also be available. In addition, we maintain a website for reflecting the evolution of the standard. Refer to www.esisa.org for details.
